Sharing files between Suse8.2 and Windows XP

I've recently reinstalled my box: SuSE8.2 on one HDD and XP on another. Untill now I always used Win98.
My problem is that I cannot share files between linux and win. I've created a special FAT32-partition for this prupose and in XP i gave this partition free for other users (may change files). In Linux i try to change the owner and/or group from 'root' to 'myself' and/or 'users', but I get the message 'you do not have sufficient rights'. Also i cannot 'chmod' it to rwxrwxrwx or something like that. I just get no access.
Funny thing is that (as 'root') i _can_ create a subdir and change the owner for that subdir. But that subdir never shows up, when i switch to xp again!!

If i cannot solve this, i'm thinking of throwing the towel, reinstall 98 and forget all about testing my sites in IE6 Testing in IE5.5 will have to do, in that case.

Does any1 have a clue what I've done wrong?

Have you tried this? smbmount //computer/sharename /directory/mountfolder -o dmask=777,fmask=777 But I hope that the LAN is isolated directly (not on line) to just the 2 puters! Because this is wide open sharing!

I do not believe you have done anything wrong. You need 2 configure SuSE a little more. I am working on it right now with SuSE 9.0. I accomplished it with Mandrake 9.2. I'll get back to you as soon as I figure it out. I believe you need to first; as a root administrator enable file sharing somewhere in the control center. Second, I am not sure yet.

Thanx for your replies, Witeshark and Sjia!

For your info: I'm not running a network, I just want to be able to mount the XP-HDD and save files onti it, so that (after switching to XP) I can test my Webprogramming in different versions of IE. The other testing (Netscape, Opera, etc.) I do in Linux.

I thought I did that file-sharing thing already, but I'll have another look into it to be sure.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanx for the help.

Yup, I saw that too, that's why I wasn't sure anymore.

But after changing the fstab-file, it seems to work and I can keep my xp anyway.

Youpie! Euhh?
