Explain?

- is that error on your client or server?
- when you 'connect to your vector box for sftp', are you using sftp from the terminal? Last time I checked, sftp wasn't an X11 program...
- Tell us the circumstances where your root account works, but not the normal user.

I'm using a linux client to sftp or ssh+svn into my vector box. I've enabled X11 forwarding on ssh as i can xlogo when i ssh in.

the error i get is from the client. i am using the terminal. i tried a svn import svn+ssh:// and used the -m parameter for the message

That sounds a bit odd -- svn+ssh obviously shouldn't need an X11 connection. Have you tried the same command without X11 forwarding?

another thing to try is
Code:
export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0
and try again.
