I don't really know what opensmtpd is so this tip is more generic:
try running the "send email via the command prompt" program (mail? mailx? sendemail?) with this in front of the call
strace -f -o /tmp/strace.log <mail-program>
where you put your normal mail command in <...>. E.g.:
strace -f -o /tmp/strace.log mail -f ...
That way, you end up with a fairly big logfile in which you can see the error messages from the system calls the program tried to use. *Maybe* that helps shed a light on the real problem.
BTW - you might have to install "strace" first ;-)
