Setting Environment Variables

If i want to change environment variable HOSTNAME from abc to xyz , how do i do it?
As far as i know if we edit /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/network and then restart the system the new value comes into effect. Is there any other shorcut method to make these changes ?
