RV620 Audio device problem

hi all,

I recently bought a new computer and installed slackware 12.2 on it. Everything works great, apart from when I launch KDE, I get the error:

error while initializing the sound driver

default can't be opened for playback(no such file or directory)

the sound server will continue, using the null output device.

So the sound doesn't work basically. Now I googled this and it let me to this ArchLinux forum: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53384

which then led me to download and install alsa: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

I installed alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils, alsa-oss, using

./configure - make - make install for each

rebooted, no improvement.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this sound card and getting it working on Linux, preferably slackware.

lspci output on it gives:

01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV620 Audio device [Radeon HD 34xx Series]
02:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs SB X-Fi

thank you very much in advance to anyone who answers

not really advice

I'm a newbie to so I cannot really help you. But I hate questions left unanswered. All I can say is that I have a similar audio card in my Vaio and it worked out of the box in Fedora 10.
As I understand (which is not by any means to be held as the truth!!) the drivers for the sound card have to be somehow in contact with alsa. A lsmod in the terminal list among others a line like this: snd_pcm 85512 2 snd_hda_intel
Also in terminal, modinfo snd_hda_intel might shed some light about the problem.
