rpc and portmapper service / security question

Hi there,
I'm a tad confused about whether to run portmapper as a service. My linux is used to access files on XP via Samba and I often login via SSH / transfer files via scp / sftp from XP to linux. I also have to ICS from XP to my linux in order to use the net on the latter. That is about it. Is it neccessary to run portmapper on my Linux and leave port 111 open ?

Regards,

Uncle.

Port mapper is used by NIS & NFS. You aren't using it so you can disable the service and close the port.
