RHEL 6.1 bootup hangs at service "rhsmcertd 240" ?

Hi Everyone,

I installed rhel 6.1 on my laptop and it was working smoothly. I was just testing various shutdown menu options like hibernate and suspend. I suspended the machine and then it kind of hanged and kept showing my a black screen. I tried pressing some keys but nothing happened so i did a hard shut down of the machine.

After that when i turned on the system showed my grub console so i though that it might be possible that grub has corrupted. I tried to read contents of grub.conf But to extreme surprise the grub.conf file was empty.

Anyhow then tried to boot the machine manually from grub, the bootup started successfully, and some services like Postfix , Crond , atd SSHd were also starting but then a service named "rhsmcertd 240" came and the bootup process just hangs up there.

I am not sure what went wrong and how it could be fixed so can anyone please explain me the issue and also a fix.

I also tried to install grub again from Rescue disk but i did nothing.

I am a newbie so if anything very common i am missing here please do correct me.

Thanks in advance.
Rohit

rhsmcertd is the Subscription daemon

The rhsmcertd is the subscription daemon.
Do you have a subscription for RHEL and if so have you subscribed the machine with this subscribtion number?
If you don't have a subscription I recommend you get CentOS on there. It's the same as RHEL, but without a need for a subscription. You don't get Red Hat support though, but that is often not a problem.

Hi,

Thanks, but no i don't have a subscription number. But i have been able to run same rhel 6.1 on my VM for quite a time without having running into such issue ever. So i am not sure why and how it got produced now ? Any hints ? I do not need the support, i just want to install it on my laptop. So how can i fix this issue, more over i did not even tried to subscribe for rhn, so not sure why this happened.
