RH9 hard drive runs excessively

I've noticed with RH9 that every once in a while whether I'm running a program or not, the hard drive will be active for several minutes at a time and during that time slows the whole system. Does RH9 have some automatic disk defragmenter that runs automatically/periodically or something?

Yes I'd say it happens every few hours or so. Just want to be sure I'm not being hacked here. What exactly is that updatedb that you mentioned?
thanks

By the way, it also seems to do it even when I'm not connected to the internet sometimes.
