Unhappy RH9 / Can Play MP3's, But No Sound In Tux Racer?

Hello All!

The title says it all.
I think that it has to do with how RH9 detected my soundcard, because when I was using Mandrake 9.1, everything worked (sound-wise).

Unfortunately, I so not have a good enough working knowledge with linux to proceed any further.

If you need me to supply any information, just tell me how to find it, and I'll get it to you.

Thanks in advance for all of the help!

Thanks for the quick reply andrew001.

I have added myself to the "sys" group in the /etc/group file. Still no sound in Tux Racer. I still play my 311 mp3's way too loud, just no sound in Tux Racer.

I bet I am missing sound in other applications as well, just being a new linux user, I never knew that they had sound in the first place!

What else can I do? If you need any info, just ask.

I think it's something really buggy with RedHat 9.0 (or ratter saying, one more buggy thing with RH9.0) I also cannot get sound in Tux, but I remember having it in Mandrake 9.1. However, I've purchased the full version of Tux (pretty good if compared with the free one, a lot of characters to choose from, better playability and etc, I just cannot stop playing it, and my son, who is only 2 years old love to see that sliding penguin too. He's gonna be a great Linux addicted for sure...lol ) and I do, have sound in RedHat 9.0 with the full version... For what I've seen in Tux forum, none with RH 9.0 had actually sound in the game so.... Good luck

The first release of a new major number like 9 is always buggy (at least for Red Hat). It's ususally best to wait to 9.1.

I have the same problem in 7.2. Sometimes the games mess up my sound completely and I have to do snd_config again. Hasn't happened in a while so I'm knocking on wood.

Hmm... What GUI are you using?

I've noticed that with my versin of tuxracer (the retail version),
sound will not work unless i kill the sound daemon -- in KDE this is a process called "artsd". In Gnome or Enlightenment it's ESound, running under a process called esd.

use the commands:

killall esd
or
killall artsd

and then try running it again.
Good luck

There are several apps that don't work with artsd on my system. Is it good for anything? There is a utility on my distro called artsdsp which allows you use these apps with artsd still running. So if you have found a use for artsd and don't want to put it out of its misery with 'killall' you can try e.g.

$ artsdsp xmms some.mp3

if you find xmms has been struck dumb by artsd. mplayer similarly.

PS to real newbies: to see if artsd is running you can use the command

$ ps aux | grep artsd

If you see 'artsd' followed by a lot of flags/numbers then its running.
