Restarting services...

Alright, here's my exact problem. I have random mouse freezes in Linux. I've found that if I restart X, the mouse works again. So I was wondering if there was any way I could restart the service (or daemon, or whatever it's called) that controls the mouse.

What shortcut key would open up a terminal? And would anyone know how to check what services are running and how to restart them?

Any help would be appreciated.

I can't say I know what is responsible for interacting with the mouse, but you can access virtual consoles with Ctrl-Alt-F2 through Ctrl-Alt-F6. You'll get a text console, and can log in as root, look at what processes are running, and restart/kill anything that looks like it's misbehaving.
