Remote Backups

I have a RH server that I need to make a remote backup of to an external drive connected to my PC. Is this possible?

The answer is surely yes, unless you have some extra constraints that you haven't mentioned.

As long as you have ssh access to the remote server, and can mount the external drive, rsync will do the job.

Great, thanks. I'll look up more info on the rsync utility.

And this also depends on what you consider a "backup", how often you need to take it, how much data, speed of the remote link, etc., etc. There are LOTS of factors involved...the word "backup" is very vague. Do you mean a full backup, with regular incremental backups? Full backups once every now and then? Concerned about the OS, or do you just need the data?

There are tools like Bacula or Arkeia that can be used to take backups over a network, but you really need to address the variables first, before tackling the problem.

Hi,

There are lot of tools that comes with most of the distros which would make backup a breeze - some of the softwares

1. fwbackups
2. Backula
3. Amanda
4. rsnapshot

If you need a commercial software

1. Backula has a commercial support
2. Zamanda (Amanda's commercial arm)
3. Vembu's StoreGrid

Siva.
