redhat8, changed hostname by editing config file, X no longer recognizes it

i changed my hostname by editing of the files in /etc/sysconfig/ , and now when X starts up it takes an extra 20 seconds or so, and it displays error msg:

hostname: host lookup failed

i remember i had this problem once before, but i cant remember the simple fix. thanks.
