RedHat Linix Pro v3.0 Mounting external vfat disks

Hi , I have been looking for a zippy speedy external , small portable disk either usb or firewire for my IBM thinkpad t40 , I settled on a seagate 100 GB external 2.5" usb 2.0 drive... I can mount it via vfat fine , but after a period of time of inactivity , meaning not transferring files to or from it . It goes to a read only file system and I cannot create or delete files or dir from that mount , I then umount it then mount it again and I am ok for a while again .. Curious if there is something wrong I am doing in my /etc/fstab

/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb vfat noauto,user,noatime 0 0

Tia
