RedHat 9 is not detecting the LAN card, but Win'98 is detecting the LAN card
Hello All GURUS,
I am new in linux.I have RedHat 9 installed on a pentium III machine , dual boot with Windows'98.I have a Realteck lan card (rtl8139t) installed on my machine,But RedHat is not detecting it,so i am unable to connect to the Lan.But the same NIC is detected by Windows98, it works fine in Windows.
Can you help in this regard so that Linux can detect the NIC and i can configure the network ?
Pls help me !!!!!!!
with best regards.
SKYNAT
As mentioned, RH9 is extremely old and support for it is non-existent. Try a more modern distro with better hardware compatibility such as Fedora 8, *buntu 7.10, or Mandriva 2008.1. Also, be sure to check the HCL.
Yes, why RH 9 - for all the reasons asked. If it's just what happened to be there, then seriously consider getting something new. Personally, I favor SimplyMEPIS. I am running 3.3.2 & 6.0 on 2 different machines, & will start on 7.0 shortly. I have done tens of installs for a variety of beginners & it is the easiest installer I have yet seen. Also, I have never had a NIC detection problem with it either.
What are the specs on your P3 box, i.e. RAM & MHz? Maybe the light version of MEPIS, AntiX, (or Ubuntu, etc.) would be more appropriate. With both MEPIS & AntiX the install CD is also a live CD that you can test drive.
How wedded are you to the W98 GUI? Are you ready for a change?
I have had 8139 based cards on & off for years w/ no trouble & even right now there is one in my perimeter firewall, the Linux driver shouldn't be giving you problems.
If you still want to use RH 9, then answer the Q's, & we'll try to help.
