RedHat 9 Additional Partitioning

I'm planning on formatting the 80gb hard drive which has Windows XP on it and replace it with RH9. The problem now is I want to partition 60gb of it for other stored files so that I wouldn't have to format the whole hard drive if I need to replace the os in case of major problems. How can I partition it without the partition being replaced by the RH9 installation process?

Also, I want to automount drives which I could read and write from. What is your recommended type of format?

The redhat installer will let you install on an existing partion and/or allow you to create new partition(s). Existing partitions can be left intact.

I'm no filesystem expert but ext3 works well for me.
