red hat 9 x-win keeps freezing

i wanted to to run a rehat server for my webpage (do nopt like microsft servers). so i installed reed hat 9 on an old pent 3 700 mghz compter. I installed x-win (or wahtever its called) because it was bigger and sounded cooler i was going to install gnome insted (my friend is running it not as a server though). i sintalled it sucessfully. when i went to boot it it freezes 5 mins after i boot it it also will only boot in text mode. what did i do wrong? and how do i reformat the hard drive? or is there anotehr way to fix this? need help
