What kind of internet connection do you have? If there is just an ethernet (not telephone) cable plugged into the back of the computer, it should work right out of the box with any distro.

EDIT: and Fedora and Ubuntu both come with Firefox pre-installed!

I do not know how. I can use my brother's computer to burn a ISO (no burner on this old beast) and go from there. But "go from there" seems to be my big issue with a real install.

My brother has 15Mbps business class Roadrunner on a (?) hub/router with 3 pc's. It is pretty fast compared to my old 1.5 DSL.

One problem with KNOPPIX is that it does not support SATA drives, which almost all new-ish computers have.

Mine is old with IDE.

I remembered that a good tutorial is the Linux beginners course on www.linux.org.

Well you might consider going to meetings to observe and absorb, and if they have an "installfest" that should definitely be a time when they'll be more open to newbie questions (at least to a few well-chosen questions). In general their willingness to help should be proportional to your willingness to help yourself.
