rebuilding RH9 kernel question

After I recompile the kernel (using Red Hat 9), how do I make sure the newly recompiled kernel is the one that is being used during boot? Is it done automatically, or do I have to move or configure files?

Say you compile X kernel, you put it in /boot and then you edit your grub/lilo config to add your new kernel.
