question about man(manual) !


Dear Friends ,

I get a command related with manaul information of linux .
"man 7 signal"

here , would u plz tell me what is the meaning of this '7' value ? And how many number I can use here in lieu of number '7' ?

waiting for ur kind reply .. ..

7 means simply that the command 'signal' belongs to the 7th category of manual pages. The full list of categories can be found eg.here.

The number is useful if there are commands with the same name in different sections of the manpages. You can refer to a special section of the manpages using
Code:
man 7 signal
(in your case).
