Proxy settings in Ubuntu (system wide)

Hello,
In our college the scenario is that we have a proxy for our connection. We connect to the internet using this proxy for this we change the settings in the browser and use the internet. So we dont get the updates neither can we download anything from the net through the terminal. So how can we change the system wide proxy settings to download the apps or any other thing from the terminal. Thanks
