Question problems installing lftp client

Trouble installing LFTP

Hey everyone, this is my first time here but you can plan on seeing alot more of me because I have just barely the faintest idea of what Im doing when it comes to linux. Im really eager to learn though.

Anyway, I just installed linux yesterday, this being my second time. My first time was in a class I took in school and we had to install red hat. Mandrake really makes the task much easier

Well, Ive now been trying to download an ftp client so I can upload to my server. Being so new to this, it took me a minute to figure out how to unzip the compressed file. But I finally got it figured out and now I can't intsall it.

I read the directions, but they arent working for me. Im only 2 steps into it. First it tells me to go to the directory in which the 'configure' file is. Ok, piece of cake, I alread know the 'cd' command. Then it tells me to type './configure' to configure the packages for the system. This is the problem so far. When I type that, I get: "no such file". I check the file using the window and Im looking right at a file thats called 'configure'.

And thats about it. I dont know what more to ask and I have no idea myself. I would be really greatful if you could help me on this. Thanks

I take it that you have downloaded the source of LFTP then?
you should untar it (tar zxvf filename.tar.gz or tar jxvf filename.tar.bz2) and then change to the newly created directory and type ./configure

is this what you have done?

you can type ls -l configure and you should see somthing like...
-rwxr-xr-x 1 fatgod users 29 Jun 23 14:03 configure

the x's indicate that the file is executable. Is it? I've never seen a souce configure file with the wrong permissions before so it should be.

I would have though that you should get an ftp client in a default install of mandrake. Try typing ftp in a terminal and see if it just works.
