Question Problem with /var. Something is filling up /var, esp. /lib/snapd/snaps.

I've been getting a warning about /var filling up. I can't figure out what is doing it or how to stop it.
Currently, when I run df -h
I get
/dev/sda3 4.6G 4.3G 0 100% /var
Can someone please point me in the right direction? Under /var, I'm seeing:
/var 4.3 GB
/lib 3.4 GB
/snapd 3.0 GB
/snaps 2.7 GB

Those numbers seem high to me, but I'm concerned about what might happen if I either empty or delete any of those directories. I also don't know what's filling them up.

Snaps can take up a *large* amount of disk space (one reason that I steer clear of such ways of installing software, personally). If you are going to continue using them, then I would advise you to increase the amount of disk space allocated to your root filesystem.

On a non-snap related note, given that you're running Ubuntu, you should be able to release some temporary space taken up by your normal package system by using:

Code:
sudo apt-get clean

Thanks, hydrurga. Okay. Can you tell me how to find out what's being installed via Snaps? I have a feeling it was something proprietary from Canonical, but I have no idea how to trace it. Or, to put it another way, how can I stop using Snaps?

Instructions on using snaps, including the listing of installed snaps:

https://itsfoss.com/use-snap-packages-ubuntu-16-04/

Let us know if you decide that you don't need any of the snaps that you have installed.

Smile Solution - removed snapd

Following the itsfoss.com link and some links to discussions on the Ubuntu website, I found:

sudo apt autoremove --purge snapd gnome-software-plugin-snap

rm -fr ~/snap

I ran the two commands from the terminal, and it appears to have worked. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
