I'm using Fedora Core 4.
Recently, I upgraded the kernel to: 2.6.16-1.2069_FC4 ... and now when i boot it... it just stalls on a screen with an X cursor...
doesn't proceed further....
How do i fix this???
I am having the same problem as the op only I am running fc5. It gets to where I can log in with user name and password goes to start and all that will come up is my wallpaper. If I reboot can get into the old kernal with no problem. Can even get to text screen with ctrl+alt+F1 where it again wants me to log in. Can move around in there but if I do startx just locks up again.
I have the old kernel intact and it has an entry in the boot menu...
So, i'm able to use the older kernel... its workin gr8.
But as soon as i boot into the new kernel, it doesn't even reach the boot screen, just gets me to a blank graphics mode screen with an X cursor that i can move around... but can't do anything else, not even ctrl-Alt-F1...
Try to check if the icons appear after some waiting, say 15-30 mins..if yes then maybe you have disabled your loopback interface with iptables. The loopback interface is used by the X Server. Try to see if it's the case.
Visham,
I kept the machine on for like 2 hours on the blank screen with the X cursor... still nothin...
So i would doubt it being the loopback interface causing problems...
Wonder what could possibly cause this...(seems to get stuck at the screen with the X...) and doesn't seem like any activity beyond that
