problem to install rpm in redhat

Dears,
I am new in linux. I've problem to install rpm in redhat enterprise edition 4. i installed rpm. when check
whether it is installed or not.

rpm -q rpmname

the message is rpm not installed

WHENI TRY AGAIN IT SAYS RPM ALRADY INSTALLED.

WHAT I DO TO INSTALLL THE RPM

clearly not a member intro. moved to Linux - Newbie.

the -q option wants a package name, not a file name. package name = myprogram, filename = myprogram.1.23.i386.rpm

try the following command

rpm -qa | grep package_name

reply whether this worked or not

that won't help him as the confugsion is between a file name and a package name.
