precision login


installed Ubuntu 12.04.5 Lts precision tty1 and it is asking for a precision login:
nothing else is working since download I need help!

During installation, you have to setup a user and a password.
Just use this password to login on tty or GDM.

is there a OVERWHELMING need for the OLD lts version ?
Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS (Precise Pangolin)
http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/
12 is a bit dated

the current Long Term Support version(LTS) is 14.04
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

tty or GDM did not work, I purchased this dell precision m6300 used and it had Linux in it, I do not know user name or new password, I`m still dead in the water. thanks for trying to help.
