playing files from NAS

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to play some video files from my NAS. Unfortunately every time I try to do so in Nautilus or Konqueror the explorer caches the file (downloading it). Is there some sort of work around so that I only have to double click the file without having it temporarily store it on my computer.

You would need to actually mount the file system on your machine, rather than just playing it while browsing the share.

can you give some details of your NAS? is it another linux box? if so i strongly recommend samba. if it's like a few hard drives attached to a wireless nic/router, that may be an issue.

Hi,
First of all thank you both for your input.
My NAS system is build with Freenas (www.freenas.org).
Freenas uses NFS and CFIS.
I use smb:// to browse my NAS files in my explorer.

If it uses NFS, thats great, i like NFS so much for my servers.

You will need to mount the device first, in your fstab you will need to add the following
line:

<device ip>:/share/name/ /local/mount/point/ nfs

Then

Code:

sudo mount -a

to mount everything in your fstab

Then this was your pc will think that the NAS is just another location on your pc. And you can use it just like every other location. All my music and videos are on my server, but mounted with NFS

One last clarification maybe. Is the file system of the NFS mounted drive relevant? I'm asking because right now all drives are ext3 formatted but I'll soon switch to UFS (with GELI encryption)

Nope, the remote filesystem does not matter. All the writing to the device os done by the NAS own host OS, so all your pc does it tell the NAS to play this file, or write this location.

Aslong as it is mounted rw you have full read and write access to it.
