For a start, I am a linux newbie, and I know nothing about permissions, groups etc.....

I would like to know, how can I setup a user,( anyone other than root, to have the same permissions as root?)

I want my user to be able to perform any task...installing apps etc etc.... Is this possible???

I am trying to install the mp3 update for Fedora, except I get the following.....

error: cannot create %sourcedir /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES




What am I doing wrong? I presume this is a problem to do with write permissions to this dir?

Can someone give me a brief explanation of how permissions, groups etc work in Linux.

There are several man pages you should consider reading and they are as follows:

chmod
chown
chgrp
usermod

To view the man pages, just simply type man and then the command name after it like this:

man chmod

And word of advice, don't create users that have root's abilities, its bad security practice. You will want to either just su or setup sudo to do certain tasks that only root can do for your other users, etc.

If you need a user with the same permissions as root, then use root

But be careful about that. If you make a mistake you can screw things up pretty good.

Open an xterm and type "man chmod". That does a pretty good job of explaining what permissions are and how they work. If there's something there that you don't get then post again...
