KDE automatically starts applications that were open when you shut down. I'm not sure about Gnome. Anyway, just make sure to exit Openoffice before you shut down.

I have closed OpenOffice on the "menu list" at the bottom before shutting down..I also tried to close it in "file, quit".. but it still starts up! Is it still running somewhere in the background?

the session option used to be under "extra" ... "something" (system xxx?)"

anyway (this might sound stupid, but ...), is there any option in the openoffice toolset which sets it to run at startup? (edit--preferences...?)
