I have a linux box running rh9 with kernel 2.4.20. I upgraded to kernel 2.6.18. I downloaded and installed module-init-tools from kernel.org and can load modules properly.

But i have a problem with iptables. The relavent iptables modules are not being loaded. AFAICS the demand loading is not working properly.. None of the modules are being loaded. BUt i can load them manually using modprobe -i.

I even tried using the latest version of iptables but in vain

and, how does the on demand module loading work? and how can it be configured ?

You also need udev and hal and other updates (in support of both) installed. It would be a lot easier to install a modern supported OS then to continue patching RHL9.

No, but are HAL and UDEV present in 2.4 kernels also? actually when running 2.4 modules were demand loaded when iptables was being started. Whats the mechanism basically in 2.4 and 2.6 ?

Nope, the use of hal and udev are for the newer 2.6 kernel series.

You might want to use the old 2.4 kernel make menuconfig along side the new 2.6 kernel make menuconfig as a side by side comparison to make sure you did not forget something.
