Once a package is installed, what to do?

This is probably a stupid question but once I have done the 'make install' part and maybe the 'make clean' what do I do with the directory, say....'gaim-0.75'.

Can I remove it or is there a reccomended place to put this stuff. Seems like my home directory is gonna get cluttered up at this rate.

Cheers

Personally, I usually keep my build trees in /usr/src/build after a make install. This makes it easier to uninstall (if "make uninstall" is implemented, plus keeps a physical record of those packages I have installed myself versus rpm's. And is pretty tidy. I keep the build trees owned by me (normal user), because I do the make install as root (obviously), but build as me.
