Very sorry, I didn't notice Page 2 and your posts - thanks; I do have a swap partition (antiX added it - I selected that option whilst installing) but the graphics card failed (15 year old PC) and after advice from http://www.motherboards.org/forums/ (incredibly helpful) I have ordered the very same item (which may therefore not work!) from ebay and a backup item from new that is higher spec'd (which may not work for different reasons!).
The replacement graphics card works fine, so my old PC now has antiX base installed OK but for a newbie used to Windows it's like being stranded some little way up a cliff - can't get up, can't get down - yet!
