well i used x-confiure and the new xorg.conf file it made but then it went and logged me in but up to the screen with a mouse cursor on the screen but it didnt move with my cordless mouse that is, I could try my corded one, but I dont see what diffrence it would make with it freezing.

And the screen you got was nothing more than a black screen with a mouse pointer?

If the only problem, now, is that you cannot use the mouse, chances are you merely need to try another driver. But, from the description you give me, I still cannot tell whether you are still experiencing graphical problems or whether X is actually loading properly.

now lets see whats wrong:

no connection to the internet, or gaim.

no 1280x1040

And still no cordless mouse, ooooooh the fustration of being a newbie,

Well im gonna go to bed, maybe i can get some more help with this tommrrow..

so... does X work now? apart from the cordless mouse?

if you want a higher resolution, while running X, try running (in a terminal) xrandr. It'll list possible resolutions.

both cordless mouse and internet will require drivers... if you post the manufacturer and model of these devices i might be able to find such drivers.
