OK I believe I have AS installed correctly...

Now can someone please explain to me as if I am an 8 year old how to start Xwindows, AfterStep. I know how to get to root in Gnome.

This is what I get in terminal from Gnome .

If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.

8yr? i thought i was young...

not sure what afterstep is, but type "ps -aux" and see if any of the processes correspond with afterstep. if so, find its process number and do "kill <pid>" check again with ps -aux and if its stubborn and still there, do "kill-KILL <pid>"

If its not there, then do what it says, delete /tmp/.X0-lock

have fun
