Not so newbie, but having X problems, just the same...

I've been using Linux off and on for a few years. Mostly Slackware, but I've installed Redhat and Mandrake on occasion. I've almost always installed the OS onto laptops. I remember having problems with X way back when. Back then, before XF86 v4, I'd have to monkey around w/ settings to get X to run on Thinkpad 600s and Dell CPi laptops. But I only ever remember having to use xf86config for the initial config, then edit the resulting /etc/X11/XF86Config file for the final tweeks.

But like I said. That was way back when. Lately, I've been using Slackware exclusively and haven't had any trouble getting X to run, generally right out of the box. I say generally, because I've been installing Dropline-Gnome before ever launching X.

I've just installed Slackware 9.1 on a Dell GX150 and am having a hell of a time getting X to run the way I'd like. Right now, I'll get X to launch, but the screen resolution is only at 640x480 and the refresh rate is 60Hz, and using the gui resolution tool in Dropline, I don't have any other options.

I've run xf86config and have had the XF86Config file show up in both /etc/X11 and my home directory as well as the /urs/X11R6/lib/X11/. I'd also read about xorgcfg and so I tried that. I found xorg.conf files in /etc/X11/ and xorg.conf.new in my home directory. I can't seem to figure out which is being referenced when I run startx. I've tried copying the xorg.conf to XF86Config, but when I do that, X never starts, I just get dark vertical bars and I have to hit ctl-alt-backspace. I've tried adding HorizSync, VertRefresh and ModeLine info to XF86Config, both of them, but that just got me from 60Hz to 85Hz, the resolution hasn't changed.

And another thing. On all my other Slackware installs, once LILO starts up, my screen defaults to a 1024x768, which I set during the install, and I get full use of gpm. Right now, on this install, it stays at 640x480 and the gpm is always schizo, it it works at all. Not only that, but when I'm launching Linux, right after I launch LILO, I get a message stating that "You passed and undefined mode number. Press <RETURN> to see video modes available, <SPACE> to continue or wait 30 seconds." When I press <RETURN>, I get "Video Adapter: Vesa VGA" and I get a list of modes. I've tried most of them, the screen seems to flatten out a bit, the font gets smaller and stretched out some, but no change when I launch X.

The video card is a 4MB Intel 815 card, the driver that XF86Config loads is i810. The monitor is a DellP780, which is really a 19" Sony Trinitron.

Can anyone help?

I know I say this all the time, but do check the X log. It's in /var/log and called Xorg.0.log or XFree86.0.log. Among the first lines you will see a reference to what configuration file is used, and browse down through the file to see what seems to be the problem.

Thanks for the tip. I've been referencing that file, looking for errors, but I didn't think to see what config file was being loaded. As it turns out, its /etc/X11/XF86Config.

This is what I have in there for monitor and card:

I know this makes for a long post, but in thinking that the answer may lie in the XFree86.0.log file, I'm posting the parts I think are pertinent here. Thanks.
