Not connecting to internet in mandriva2006

I have messed with this time and time again and I'm not able to connect to the internet for some reason. I'm on a cable modem and the computer connects with XP but will not connect with Linux.

When I start, it gives me desktop but the icon to display about the connection shows it not connecting. I have read the manual for this but can't find anything to fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Do:

ifconfig

and see if there is eth0 in there. If there isn't, linux doesn't recognize your NIC. If eth0 is in the ifconfig output, post what it says here. You can also try:

cd /etc/init.d
sh network restart

if eth0 is in ifconfig

What kind of connexion do you have, though :
- is your modem plugged with an ethernet plug, or with an USB plug ?
- does your connexion require a login-password, or is it automatically recognized when you're using windows ?

Your distro must have graphical tools to configure automatically the network connexion, have you tried them ?
