North Bridge OC

Hello, I`m stoked with Linux Mint, coming from windows a month or so ago. The transition from a lifetime of windows to Linux was so easy , i find that linux is so well thought out and intuitive.

I don't do much else but surf and game. I`m an overclocker from way back. I have always enjoyed the OC challenge. I play steam games, 2 in particular, Sandstorm insurgency and KF2. Both work perfectly except i cant get the fps on top right corner of sandstorm)

Now my issue which was sorted but i just thought it would be good to make a record of it, in case others experienced same.

Whenever i jumped out of insurgency sandstorm, my pc would freeze and need a reboot.

I ended up setting the pc to default values in bios and noticed it wldnt freeze when jumping out of game. long story short, i lowered North Bridge by 200 mhz, from 4.7 to 4.5 and left the OC at 4.9. oh please note, that in windows the NB at 4.7 worked well even after jumping out of game. It seems linux mint is a little more sensitive to OCing.

This fixed the freezing issue. I would be interested to know why my ping is far more stable in linux and slightly lower than it is in windows, if anyone has an idea?

Otherwise, why ppl stick with windows is beyond me. p.s. Linux mint 20.3

Thanks

linux and windows use different drivers for video and have different filesystems. So it is quite difficult to compare them. I don't know which driver is more effective, which kernel can use the available resources more efficiently - or produce more heat or have more bugs. Also I don't know which one will give better result.

I have no idea about that ping related thing, would be nice to give us more details.

Thanks pan64..

I haven't noticed any deficit going from windows to linux. There are some small things such as apps like cpu-z i do without. Lots to learn, but like i said i have noticed that in game my network is considerably more stable , ping moves around much less than it did in windows, possibly due to the state of my windows). The fps in the KF2 server most played is as good if not better than windows..

My only concern is security because i have been hacked before in windows. Ports are always going to be open , are there apps that give real time protection specific to linux mint. I have a kapersky subscription that i have yet to try install.

Otherwise so far so good.. thanks

security is a different issue. You ought to open a new thread about that. But in general it depends on the maintainer. You can switch on firewall, install some scanners on linux too.
