no sound until after startx

[this post moved here from linux-general]

I'm down to the second-to-last problem on my newly Linux'd machine! Woot! (largely thanks to this forum )

So here's the problem:
When I boot up the computer, I like to turn on some music. So I run madplay /whatever/files/i/want/*. This works just fine; the file tags come up and the counter indicates that it's playing. But there's no sound!

However, if I startx (into KDE) and then run madplay from Konsole, it works fine. What's more, even after I log out of KDE and I'm back in tty, madplay still works!

If i just run X and not startx, no sound. So clearly startkde is doing something.... anybody know what? How can I make it happen at boot instead? (short of booting init=4)

Thanks!

It is probably starting arts or esound (sound systems that allow other programs to use the speakers through them)

Check for artsd after you run kde

Erm....

~$ artsd
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:549snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe
~$

And the sound still doesn't work......

What could the problem be?
