Unhappy No Sound on new Laptop with Ubuntu 10.04

Hello All, I just got a new Laptop, HP Compaq Presario CQ42, I installed
Ubuntu 10.04LTS and all is running fine but no Sound from the in-build
Speakers or Head-Phones. I replaced Ubuntu with Fedora13 and Sound works
fine. Could please someone explain to me how to get the Sound working in
Ubuntu? All Sound-Settings in Ubuntu are set to 100%, nothing muted.

Could you provide the output of lspci and lsmod, please?

It might help members get a better idea of what your current situation is.

My new sony had no sound with 10.04.
lspci shows me the sound is an Nvidia HDAC (rev a1) chipset.

I needed to install linux-backports-modules-alsa-kernel-name and reboot.

Then sound worked
