No sound on dell inspiron 1520 laptop

I just installed Ubuntu Gutsy on a dell inspiron laptop (1520) and I have no sound. When I click the sound icon on the main panel I get the following error:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
Please help.

I had the same problem on my Toshiba Tecra on a Gutsy update. Turned out there was an extra device for sound in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base. Don't know if this is the same problem you are having but you may want to look in there for an extra sound device. I am not sure if this applies to all setups or not. But I think you should have a line something like

Code:
options snd-DEVICE model=MODEL
Where DEVICE is your sound card and MODEL is the model of the card.

In my case I had that line with a long string for the model. Plus I had the line with just the one word model. I am not at that computer now so I do not know the exact line--which probably would not help you since it is a different system anyway. I got a ton of help from the guys at irc.freenode.net in #alsa.

I know this is vague but I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction-- and if not I hope someone else comes by that can offer better help.

See if it has info on your sound card.

I am at the system that I had the sound problems with after updating Gutsy previously. I am sure your system likely has a different sound card but maybe when you updated you had a similar thing happen. The file is /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

This is the line that was incorrect. Once commented out sound worked again. Notice all the additional model info and the two model=
Code:
options snd-hda-intel model=basicoptions snd-card-0 enable=1 index=0 model=basic
This was the correct line for my system.
Code:
options snd-hda-intel enable=1 index=0 model=basic
Hope this helps, let us know how it goes. If it is happening that Gutsy is adding the additional line to the alsa-base file breaking sound on some systems then I hope they have it resolved before final release-- I think that is suppose to be Friday.

Thanks

just wanted to say thanks to wit_273, his solution worked perfectly.

i had to mv the the file as root to the right directory after i'd edited it and saved it to home, but other than that, awesome. thanks.
