Hey whansard. I'm having a problem with this. I set up my internet account. If you want i can give you details how i set up. When i click the activate button. It won't activate. It's only suppose to take about 10 to 20 seconds to activate. It's taking about 15 mintues or so then i quit. There is something wrong with that. I even load the two commands when i boot up. Please reply back. Thanks whansard.

do you mean you dial your internet provider, and you
cannot connect, or the modem tried to initialize and
then cannot, and just sits there?

i saw a on that howto before how to detect which
hal= thing you should use for your modem. i just
guessed that you had hal=789, but i dont' know that.
you should look at that other thread and try to figure out
which modem you have for sure.

ok a while back i checked with compaq. I already know what the name of my modem is. It's PCTEL Platinum V. 90 modem. I ask compaq what chipset do i have build in my modem. They looked that up for me. There is no chipset. It's just this name PCTEL Platinum V. 90 modem.

I don't know how i'm going explain this one but i'm going to do my best. I click on the activate button to connect to the internet. I should'nt say it does nothing but it suppose to take only about 15 seconds or so to connect. It's not connecting. Why can't i connect?? Please reply back. Thanks whansard.

Well, Every winmodem has a chipset. Otherwise they wouldn't work.. I looked it up and the conclusion I came to was "1789W"... Not sure why Compaq couldn't tell you that...Just an update for everyone I guess..... Seems to hang on activation. We are looking at the logs upon activation... Still think it's going to boil down to an unsupported Kernel.... I don't think there is too much more I can do here if it's not obvious in the logs...... Hypothetically, If Derek posted the output of the logs, it should probably be done on a new thread or no? These types of posts get to be an eyesore after a while.......

Jon

we're still talking about derek's pctel modem in redhat 9.
why start a new thread? i think this thread should live
in infamy. sometime in the next couple of weeks, i'll
get redhat 9, and compile that stinking pctel module,
and email the kernel and modules to derek.
come to think of it, i don't need redhat to do that, he just
needs a kernel and modules with that pctel module
included. i'll just use a different version so it doesn't
overwrite his current one.

answer questions till i was groggy. half the time i'm
on this site i'm half drunk or half asleep.

Derek... I have been following your thread for some time now and if you will forgive me I do not wish to sound insulting or to cause offence but I really think you should look at the reasons why so many of your advisors have given up on you. Perhaps you are being too insistent or perhaps you are demanding too much of their time without listening to the advice you have been given. From what I have seen various helpers have spent an incredible amount of time on you and yet you become petulant when they don't respond immediately.

I really think you should re-read all you have been given and in the process learn. If and when you get stuck then re-post but you cannot be spoon fed for the duration.

As I said I do not mean to offend and no offence is intended.

Hey guys. Hey Rick. jon has not gave up on me. I got some postes for you to read. I'm only going to copy and paste some postes. So Rick and everyone else please read.

jon. Why are you giving up on me?? Are you trying to tell me that you don't want to help me anymore?? reply back.

No dude. I had class all day friday and saturday. My laptop keyboard is acting up and some keys dont work as well...Having to paste certain letters.Give me a week to send it to dell. comment out sound modules and then try it. Still think you should post all your output to that pctel mailing list....

Jon

You have a WINMODEM... They only run on Windows.... Unless someone happens to make a driver for it... I am still having to paste some letters. My forward and back slash key doesnt work along with my hyphen key, end braket, end parenthesis, plus sign, apostrophe, quatation and the p key.. I will still help you but I NEED to send this in to dell ASAp. Its a laptop and I have no external keyboard... I cant help you now. All my important keys are missing for commands... Im really tired of pasting this stupid p.....

Redo ALL of your modem from

cp

to

inserting the modules

then do

/sbin/lspci -v
/sbin/lspci -n

ut all that in a text file. Then put your modules.conf file at the end.

Hold on to that...

Do this as well.. Maybe this will get it to work....

su
vi /etc/modules.conf

press the I key

put a # right before

alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio

Do you understand
on the same line right before that

then hit the ESC key and then hold down SHIFT and press the Z key twice

then type

/sbin/depmod -a

Reboot the machine and then load the modules and try to connect... I cant and wont post anymore until I get my computer back from dell... Good luck

Jon

First step: Get the file pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz from here

Step 2: cd /where/you/put/file (make sure it's not on floppy disk, if it is, then copy it somewhere first)

Step 3: tar -xzf pctel-0.9.6.tar.gz It should create a directory.

Step 4: cd dir_created_in_step_3

Step 5: ./configure --with-hal-list lookup for a hal matching your modem.

Step 6: ./configure --with-hal=your_hal_as_per_step_5

Step 7: make

Step 8: make install

Step 9: insmod -f pctel

Step 10: insmod -f ptserial

Done!
