No GUI....noob, go figure

X wont start on boot, server crashes when I startx. I've tried RH 7.2 and 9 and have the same problems. Runlevel drops to 3 on boot. My S3 card is supported with 3 different versions incl generic and I've tried all 3. I stick with generic monitor. I have a proview 510, the closest in setup is 570.

Log in as root when you get to runlevel 3 or console mode. Go to /var/log. Open up XFree86.9.log in an editor (vi, nano, pico, etc). If you like using cat you can type cat XFree86.9.log | more. Then to scroll a page at a time you hit z. If you want to scroll through the pages that you viewed hit shift+page up or shift+page down. If the error messages are to greek to you. You can copy the file to a disk. To do this:

mount /mnt/floppy
cp /var/log/XFree86.9.log /mnt/floppy

Then copy the contents of the file in here.

BTW, you can use lynx, a text-based web browser, if you are unable to use gui for the internet.
