no audio through yamaha receiver via optical cable

Hi,

I am running Mint cinnamon 15. I have an EX58-UD3R mobo connected to my samsung 3D TV using HDMI, and connected to my Yamaha RX-V567B receiver via optical cable.

In settings>sound if I set to SP/DIF I get two channel output only. If I set to Analogue sound I can select 5.1 but there is no sound at all.

I want to have the sound as it was on Windows - 5.1 sound though the optical, to the receiver.

What am I doing wrong?

Other than install mint, and run the update manager, I have not installed any 3rd party drivers or applications.

thanks
Tanya

until you get a better reply pls post the full output to these commands
Code:
aplay -l
aplay -L
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec
cat /proc/asound/card1/codec#0 | grep Codec
I don't have hdmi but its possible you might need a model=string to enable 5.1
but you are on mint which means its highly likely you have pulseaudio.

to get around that, for the moment, post a screenshot of each of these commands pls
Code:
alsamixer -c 0
alsamixer -c 1
Leaping ahead, I am interested if the alsamixer for your hdmi shows any spdif output setting and
is the hdmi showing 2 ch or 6 ch
