So sorry, I misunderstood your post, but yes, try ubuntu, then reinstall grub using the steps I provided.

Better yet, run os-prober to see if your original ubuntu install is recognized first. If it is, then reinstall grub. If not, try ubuntu, then run gksu nemo or sudo nemo if gksu is not installed. Then mount the drive and backup your files.

Only if usb was written with persistence

Great, but run update-grub after. Similar things happened to me and then somehow the sd* letters got switched, and I selected Debian and got Linux mint!
