new user guidence.

Hi all,

Im using Redhat 8 with Lilo on a MSI KT6 Delta-VIA mobo, Geforce2 graphics, AMD XP2600 and 256mb DDR, 40Gig HD.

1. My onboard LAN - ive tried my cable modem stright into my mobo, into a Netgear 5 port switch, and still no internet connection (works on windows),
unsure whether its due to not being able to use VIA 4 in 1 drivers for mobo or that i need to try a router to get round my cable modem looking for LAN on pc.

2. Can i install graphics card drivers if no mobo drivers are installed ?

3. Whats a good way for a new linux user to start using linux ?

More questions later.

Thanks.

well, for your internet connection...

Do you have an ethernet card?? Because for me my onboard LAN did not work nd i needed to buy an ethernet card. Secondly if you do have one is it compatible with linux? If it is than maybe try taking it out and reboot. Than unconfigure it then reboot again with it in.

1 - what kinda chip does the card have?? what's the output of lsmod??

2 - no, but they are likely already installed, otherwise nothing would work...

3 - read, read, and read... also, don't expect things to be like in windows... if you expect things to be like in windows then you'll freak-out... ask questions, be humble... read, read... use http://www.google.com/linux a lot, read, read... don't fear the command line... learn the command line... avoid the distros with "pretty gui configuration tools" if you can, you'll learn a lot more and you won't become dependant on a specific distro... read, read... read...

ps: the official nvidia drivers are here:

Single boot linux. Just use it - don't be afraid of it, you (probably) won't break anything.

I just fitted NIC card and linux see connection through switch but to use it i need to reconfigur cable set box to work with the NIC in linux box, but that connection wont work with pc, easier to buy a router.

As the VIA 4 in 1 mobo drivers dont work with linux and the drivers used now are as from install, what else needs to be installed before i go play ?

Thanks.

the linux chipset drivers are open source free software so they are already included in your distro's cd(s)... you don't need any "4 in 1"...

before you can "play" you need to make sure you have the official nvidia drivers installed for your vdieo card... these AREN'T free software, so they CAN'T be included in your (free) distro's cd (unlike the chipset drivers)... you need to get them direct from nvidia:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html

read the instructions carefully, and check-out the threads on this site...

without the official drivers, you won't get 3d hardware acceleration...
