Distribution: Linux Mint 9, Linux Mint 17.2(xfce), LMDE2(Mate), Debian Jessie minimal (with standalone OBox)

For a smooth trouble-free transition Mint7 is the safest bet. If you want to get blown away with the difference in appearance, try Crunchbang. I am dual booting with the two, both are stable solid distros with most things that work out of the box.
