networking between ubuntu 14 and Windows xp

Hi, I have one computer with Windows 7 and linux ubuntu 14.
The other computer is with Windows xp and ubuntu 14.
Everybody communicates well except with ubuntu and Windows xp.
Both computers can't see each other, when I click on Windows netwok I have an error message that says "The list of servers for this workgroup is unavailable".
My samba server is properly comfigured and works in 7 and ubuntu.
My xp computer just has a user with no password.
I have installed link layer topology on my xp computer ans net bios over tcp/ip.
I tried disabeling my anti virus on my xp and I have no other firewall installed other thand the wondows default.

I can't find much information on this problem on the net and my manuals

Thank you

Bruno

Can you ping the Windows XP box from the Ubuntu box and vice versa, that is, have you verified that they can see each other? Are they on the same subnet (I'm certain they are but it's something that should be verified also)?

It's been a while since I had XP. Have you installed netBEIU to the XP box? As I recall, I had to do that. I think I also had to set up a login user and a password for the XP box and enter them in my /etc/samba/smbpasswd file, but, as I said, it's been a long time.

A web search for "network windows xp linux" will turn up a number of links. You might also take a look at Samba by Example (PDF). That's the guide I followed.

Thanks Frank,
I created a password on my user name on my xp box and installed netbeui and now everything is working fine from the linux side but I still can't see the linux box on my xp side, do you have any other ideas?
I can ping both computers and they are on the same subnet mask.
The network is a simple nat router.

Regards,

Bruno
