network monitoring:unable to launch nagios network monitoring system

i compiled and configured nagios-3.1.2 after downloading the source codes on fedora 8. the apache version is 2.2.6-3.despite the step by step details whhich i followed to the letter, i was not able to launch the service on the web interface.when i try to launch the web interface using "http://localhost/nagios",i get the error message "the requested url/nagios not found on this server.
i would want to uninstall nagios and do a fresh installation just incase but i don't kno the command to use.
i am really new to linux and any help towards uninstalling nagios or resolving the issue would be really appreciated.
