network failure

I am completely new to linux and I'm having a great deal of difficulty with what is likely the most difficult part of linux - Installing it.

most things seem to be working but I cannot get my machine on the internet. I am running the latest release of SUSE on an old AMD k-6 350. The ethernet card is a Compex RL2000 and the card itself appears to be installed correctly. I checked the network settings and it is set to have an IP assigned but it does not seem to actually be obtaining an IP (keeps coming up 127.0.0.0). My network is run through a Linksys wireless router.

At this point I have completely run out of ideas anyone here have any suggestions? I briefly tried a demo version of Lindows before I installed SUSE and the network seemed to work just fine with that so I am at a complete loss now.

Thanks...

hi there,

Just open up the network GUI tool. you should most probably have it under system settings option of the main menu. Check your IP address one more time. Check ur subnet mask and the gateway. i have made some simple mistakes like putting 1192 instead of 192 and stuff like that. Just change it and save the settings. then u open a command line and execute the command (as root)

service network restart

also, at times, the cables might be a bit loose in the NIC. check that one out too
