need bootloader ONLY on USB

I want to dual boot, but I don't want the boot loader on any of my hdd -- I have a usb stick that when it's plugged in I need it to boot to that and give me a menu to choose which drive to boot from... my sata drive (win) or ide (linux).

I have searched and searched -- all point to putting the entire linux system on usb, or the instructions for grub on usb are way over my head...

I need a step by step. I'm currently running ubuntu.

This is just a thought, but have you tried just downloading grub, and installing it to the usb stick?
./configure --prefix=/mnt/usb, make, sudo make install
