Question Need advice on a project

Hello everyone!

My very first post on LQ and I'm hoping to get a bit of guidance on a project I've decided to tackle. I consider myself to be extremely technical (server admin, db admin and application developer) but normally I fight for the dark side of the force (Microsoft).

I've been a nethack player for a long, long time and I'd like to get the NAO version of nethack up and running. Either on my existing hosting account or on a spare machine at my home.

NAO Nethack version and git https://alt.org/nethack/naonh.php

My hosting company is namecheap and they are running CloudLinux (2.6.32-531.11.2.lve1.2.55.el6) which seems to be based on CentOS which in turn seems to be based on Red Hat. Excuse me for breaking this out I'm just new to all the different version.

Now my questions...

1. Is it even possible to get Nethack up and running on that hosting account? I've tracked down a few dependent libraries (x11) which doesn't seem to be on the server, or at least in my little part of the server and I wouldn't know how (yet) to install them anyway. I don't want to beat my head against a wall if it's not even possible.

2. If I can't get it running on the hosting account I have a spare machine at home which I can dedicate for this exercise. Which distribution/version of Linux should I chose for this machine if my goal is to eventually run the Nethack server in the easiest way possible?

If a am missing any crucial information just let me know and I'll get right on it.

Thank you for reading!

- S

I posted a more specific question to the Distribution forum so don't worry about this post. I tried to delete it but couldn't quite figure out how. Thank you!
